Baby Shopping, and Baby Names...

Good Lord, the freaking painting and chair rail are finally finished... I mean could this have taken any longer? I am really happy with how it looks, and I am determined to set up the nursery this weekend. I think Dave said he had plans to put the crib together tonight, so once its in there I will stop hyper ventilating.

Speaking of which, Dave and I took a family shopping trip to Target yesterday evening. Dave put Rachel in the front of the cart, and I grabbed a cart myself and attempted to put Laura in the front seat as well. Apparently, Laura would prefer not to be in the front seat, and had a HUGE HISSY outside before we even got in the building. We are talking she just collapsed in the parking lot, so unlike her. So we waited for her to just calm down and then we put her in my carts basket part, and that was sufficient for her. There's just no reasoning with a 2 year old sometimes. Dave and I bought a bunch of little odds and ends for the baby, such as a mattress pad, smaller nipples for the bottles, a few extra bottles since we have lost some while in the hands of his parents and they never replaced them (sore subject), some new binkys, baby gas medicine, a few new baby toys like rattles, a pack of diapers ( I am attempting to stock up on them and try to get a pack whenever I am out), and some other baby odds and ends. I did get a pink cover thingy for my new Wii controller, but everything else was for new baby girl.

I think I have a name for her, but I have been so back and forth I still do not want to say as I could very possibly change it. I am going to suck it up though and buy the initials next week so I can put the monogram of the baby's name on the wall as a decoration, so I have to settle on it soon.

It's been really freaking hard for me to figure out a name. I have not been able to tell this story fully without almost crying, but quite honestly I wanted to somehow honor my granny with the name in some manner. Her name was Mary Braxton, and if this baby had been a boy his name was going to have Braxton as his first or middle name. I decided this on the day she died. I was taken completely off guard when my mom emailed me to say she was in the dying process, and I left work immediately to go see her and meet my parents at where she was. I had learned I was pregnant earlier that month, and was a bit shocked about being with child again, but had finally gotten over the shock and had moved on to getting excited. My mom knew I was expecting, but we took forever telling anyone, so at the point I went to see my granny that day my dad didn't even know yet. Anyways, as she laid their dying I just said to myself that if it was a boy it was going to have Braxton in it for her, mainly because we figured after two girls we were bound to have a boy. I kissed her goodbye before we left, and told her that she was going to be a great granny again for the 3rd time.

So after all little Giles number three is going to be a girl, and I don't think Braxton would work with the first name I want. My granny's first name was Mary, and I just can't work that in with names I like either. Also, as silly as it may sound, I am a bit worried if I did try to honor my granny someone would feel slighted for me not picking them instead, or I worry Dave's family would feel slighted for us not honoring someone in his family. Can you tell I put way to much thought into things? My granny was pretty special to me though, and I really miss her, and I just get upset because her last years were robbed from her and us because of her dementia.

So anyways, I have got to settle on a name, and I am giving myself until Monday.

That's gotta be a tough decision. I got pregnant with CNS right after my grandfather passed away. He was greek and so we chose Nicholas to honor his heritage, as C's middle name. I know it's hard to think you may offend / hurt someone but as long as you and Dave are happy with it-do it. It's easy to see that your Granny was very special to you and I think it's wonderful you want to honor her this way. It'll be an honor for your new baby girl, too!

Yay for the chair rail and stripes being done! No pep talks needed. :)

We were torn naming Aidan too. The husband wanted to name him after his dad (who is still living, he just always wanted to name his son after his dad) and I was hoping to either name him using part of my dad or grandpa's names (both deceased). Obviously in the end, we threw that out the window and went with something totally different. In our baby book though, there's a section for "what names we thought of" and we included the names there. Even if you don't decide to name her after your Granny, you could do something like that in her baby book so that she could know just how special she was.

Or... you could use Braxton as her middle name.

Granny was the bomb. As I'm sure I mentioned when she passed, I have fond memories of hanging out with her at your family holidays. She was always kind and had a nice sense of humor. The kind of adult that kids feel comfortable around... Braxton would be a spiffy middle name, and if it just doesn't suit you and you don't want to use the name, it doesn't slight Granny's memory in any way. Good luck, sounds like you're working yourself in a pickle.
